Nature activities and events happening this week 22-28 SEP 2003 23 Sep (Tue): Nature on Film ("Social Climbers") Time: 1-2pm Place: Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, NUS Science Faculty, Block S6, Level 3. Public Gallery AVA Room Free screening of note-worthy nature documentaries, local and international. During the months of Jul to Sep, the screenings will feature the BBC and David Attenborough's survey of mammals. This is the ninth of 10 episodes. The series includes spectacular, often never before seen footage of 4000 mammal species from tiny two-inch pygmy shrew to the enormous blue whale; from the sloth to the swift cheetah; from the ugly naked mole rat to the adorable human baby. Place: Geylang East Community Library, Auditorium (3rd floor) Tony O’ Dempsey will showcase the unique activities of the ‘VERT Group’ which aims to collect much-needed data on native mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. It will focus on the group’s recent highly interesting survey studies conducted on Pulau Ubin. It will also include a brief history of the group’s survey activities over the past several years, followed by a more detailed look at the methodology, organisation and highlights of the recently completed Pulau Ubin Verterbrate Survey. Place: Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve "Fun with Nature" takes us to different habitats from September till the end of the year! Join the Education Group at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and come face to face with plants and animals of our mangroves. Is a mudskipper a fish or an amphibian? Why do mangrove trees have breathing roots? If you’re curious about who lives in our mangroves, then join us for some fun! Bring along a pencil and your nature journal if you have one. A nominal fee of $5 (members) or $10 (non-members) per kid will be collected. This does not include the entrance fee of $1/adult and 50¢/kid. Pre-registration required. This lovely nature area is worth repeat visits. Come out here to enjoy the open spaces and the scenic beauty, and do a spot of birdwatching too. We will be looking at how much the projected development will affect this site as it has not been included into the URA Master Plan.More details at the NSS Conservation Committee website. Contact: grant@gvn.com.sg or 6337 6062. 28 Sep (Sun): Slide-talk on the Delights Of Water Plants Time: 10-11am Place: Gardens' Briefing Room, Visitor Centre Singapore Botanic Gardens Would you like to know more about the plants that thrive in ponds and lakes? Interested to have a closer look* at the different types of water plants? Which aquatic plants are suitable for our region? Andrea Kee, Manager/Living Collections will reveal all. Open only to NSS members and associates. Alfred Chia of the Nature Society (Singapore) bring to the "kampung" and rural areas which are good for both Common Flameback and Laced Woodpeckers, the melodious Straw-headed Bulbul, the Red Junglefowl, as well as some mangrove species. There will also be a look out for the Oriental Pied Hornbill, the only place where they occur naturally in Singapore. More details at the NSS Wild Birds Singapore website.
