Buloh Wetland Reserve
Route Two
5 kms, 2-3 hours to walk, level gravel trail but long and thus
not suitable for young children, pack a meal and bring lots of water
This
route brings you into the wild heart of the Reserve.
It includes the longest boardwalk of the Reserve bringing you through
the unpronounceable Mangrove Arboretum. This 575m boardwalk
links Route 1 to Route 3. Being relative far from the Visitor Centre
and a bit of a hike, the area is more tranquil. All manner of birds
and mangrove creatures are more likely to be seen, confidently going
about their daily business.
The route brings you to two favourite hides for birdwatchers and photographers:
hide 2D and hide 2E which are right in the middle of
two tidal ponds. Here, you are surrounded by mudflats and the shorebirds
and animals that are attracted to them. Among them, you might see
the storks. Please be quiet when approaching and staying at these
hides so as not to scare off the birds that other visitors might have
already been patiently waiting for.
Going past the hides, the Mangrove Arboretum used to be the home of
a large colony of herons. The herons have since left for unknown reasons,
but it's still worth a look to see if any might have returned.
The route takes you to the Prawn Pond where demonstrations
of traditional prawn farming are regularly held.
The route passes the old Tower Hide which has since become
"too short" as the vegetation at the Reserve flourished.
The route then goes towards the coast, circling a little pond before
you double back. As you rejoin Route 1, drop by the Aquatic Plant
Pond. |
