Buloh Wetland Reserve
Mangrove Boardwalk
500m, 30 mins to walk, easy flat wooden platform with no steps,
suitable for young children and wheelchair bound.
The
Mangrove Boardwalk is my favourite part of the Reserve, although ironically,
it's not actually within the Reserve proper.
The Boardwalk brings you closer to the trees and wildlife of the mangroves
than any other facility in the Reserve. And without getting your feet
wet and muddy!
There's so much to see that often we can spend 1-2 hours just exploring
this boardwalk. You are almost certain to see Giant Mudskippers and
amusing Tree-climbing crabs.
As the tide comes in, you might see Mangrove stingrays and other fishes
rushing in to feed on the mudflats. Birds such as the kingfishers
and woodpeckers are commonly encountered, while the White-breasted
fish eagle and bee-eaters sometimes rest in the dead trees nearby.
The Boardwalk goes through four shelters which are gaily decorated
with artwork by students inspired by the mangroves. These are great
places to have a leisurely breakfast while enjoying the morning "rush
hour" of wildlife, or an evening snack as the cooling day brings
out the next peak of wildlife activity.
Go with a volunteer guide to spot all kinds of amazing creatures,
learn more about the fascinating Mud Lobster, how the bizarre roots
and forms of mangrove trees are adapted to flourish in this habitat.
