Blunt tip acropora coral
Acropora sp.*

Family Acroporidae
updated Nov 11
Where seen? This branching hard coral with less obvious axial corallites is sometimes seen on some of our Southern shores.

Features: Colonies 15-20cm. Thick branches of various shapes and lengths forming an untidy bush-like shape. The branches don't interlock and some emerge from a flat base. Generally, the axial corallite at the growing tip not particularly large. The radial corallites are smoothly rounded and differently arranged on different branches of the same colony. Can be quite colourful with a rainbow of shades seen in one colony, but generally orangey-brown.

The Broad-barred acropora goby (Gobiodon histrio) was seen in one of these corals, as well as tiny clams.

There are probably several different species on this page. It's hard to distinguish them without close examination of small features and they are grouped by large external featurs for convenience of display.
