Bumpy plate montipora coral
Acropora sp.*

Family Acroporidae
updated Nov 11
Where seen? This hard coral that forms plates with a bumpy surface is sometimes seen on some of our Southern shores.

Features: Colonies seen 15-20cm, sometimes much bigger. Flat plates sometimes encrusting and with columns or knobs in the centre. The outer edge of the plate is smooth, lacking polyps, usually paler or in a different colour. Bumps between the corallites, the same size as or much larger than the polyps. Colours usually brown, sometimes with greenish or bluish polyps. Polyps tiny (0.2cm or smaller) with short tentacles and short body column.

There are probably several different species on this page. It's hard to distinguish them without close examination of small features and they are grouped by large external features for convenience of display.
