Smooth plate montipora coral
Montipora sp.*

Family Acroporidae
updated Nov 11
Where seen? This hard coral that forms plates with a relatively smooth surface is sometimes seen on some of our Southern shores.

Features: Colonies seen 15-20cm, sometimes much bigger. Flat plates sometimes encrusting and with knobs in the centre. The outer edge of the plate is smooth, lacking polyps, usually paler or in a different colour. There may be bumps between the corallites but these are usually tiny and smaller than the polyps. Colours usually brown, with polyps that are brown, white, green or blue. Polyps tiny (0.2cm or smaller) with short tentacles and short body column.

There are probably several different species on this page. It's hard to distinguish them without close examination of small features and they are grouped by large external features for convenience of display.
