Family Faviidae

updated Nov 11
Where seen? This boulder-shaped hard coral with small circular corallites are often seen on many of our shores.

Features: Colonies seen 10-15cm, sometimes larger. The corallites have separate walls, are generally circular and close to one another. The result is a regular pattern of small O-shapes.

The colony is generally a smooth boulder shape. Colours seen include brown, green and blue. Often, they are seen to flouresce a bright green, especially near sunset.

Some species of Favid corals recorded for Singapore that have these patterns include: Favia and Montastrea species.
It's hard to distinguish them without close examination of small features and they are grouped here by large external features for convenience of display.
