White grooved brain coral
Symphyllia sp.*
Family Mussidae
updated Oct 08
Where seen? This fleshy boulder-shaped hard coral with striking white portions is often seen on many of our Southern shores.

Features: Colonies seen about 15-20cm, hemispherical and rather flat. Corallites are large (2-5cm) with 'teeth'. The corallites form brain-like patterns with wide valleys (2-3cm wide). There is usually a slight dent or groove along the top of the wall between the corallites. The skeleton is covered with thick, fleshy tissue. The tissue at the top of the wall is white. Colours seen generally dark brown with pale green.

These corals may not actually be of the same species, but are grouped together for ease of display.
