Spotted black hermit crab
Clibanarius cruentatus

Family Diogenidae
updated Dec 10

Where seen? This pretty black hermit crab is sometimes seen, in coral rubble near reefs. It seems to be more active at night.

Features: Body about 1-1.5cm. Both pincers equal sized. Body and legs with some hairs, black with bright white spots all over. Eyes dark with tiny white spots and a white rim, on stout orange stalks. Short antennae blue with orange tips. The long antennae are orange or red.

Human uses: Hermit crabs have become popular pets and these are usually taken from the wild. Hermit crabs, however, belong in their habitats and not in our homes. More about the impact of keeping hermit crabs as pets.
