Leaf oyster
Isognomon ephippium
Family Isognomonidae
updated Oct 10
Where seen? This rather large flat clam is commonly seen in our mangroves, scattered like white coins among mangrove tree roots. Sometimes also seen growing on rocks or sea walls in sheltered areas.

Features: 6-8cm. The two-part shell is thin, flat and usually circular in shape.
Usually white or greyish. It sticks to tree roots with byssus threads, thus giving the common name of tree oyster. Often found in large groups.

Status and threats: Like other creatures of the intertidal zone, they are affected by human activities such as reclamation and pollution. Trampling by careless visitors can also affect local populations.
