Smooth grooved drill
awaiting identification*
Family Muricidae
updated Oct 08

Where seen? This prettily marked drill is often seen in groups on large boulders on our Nothern shores. Sometimes, groups of small ones are seen under large stones.

Features: 2-3cm. Shell not as thick as the other more commonly encountered drills. The shell lacks spiny portions and has fine spiralling grooves. The white and brown patterns on the shell is often hidden by encrusting plants and animals. Operculum orange or yellow.

What does it eat?
It eats barnacles and bivalves, drilling a hole through the shell and sucking out the victims.
