Dolphin shell snail
Angaria delphinus
Family Trochidae
updated Oct 09

Where seen? This large snail with an encrusted shell but pearly inner mouth was seen at Tanah Merah.

Features: 4-6cm. Shell, thick and flattened conical. The shell of a living snail is usually hidden by encrusting lifeforms. The outer shell has spiky projections which may be short or long. But we should not clean off the camouflaging cover on a living snail as this might put it in danger. You can have a look at some photos on the internet of the empty shell to see what the cleaned shell looks like. The opening of the shell is pearly. The operculum is thin, brown and made of a horn-like material.

Upper side usually covered
with encrusting organisms.
