Where
seen?
Dense clumps of this seaweeds are commonly seen on many of our shores.
On boulders, rocks and stones near the mid water mark. Abandoned ropes
and nets often become heavily matted with this seaweed.
Features: Dense bunch of many
slender, cylindrical 'stems' about 5-10cm long. Each 'stem' branches
many times into short slender side branches with tapering tips. Black,
maroon sometimes purplish.
Human uses: Gracilaria
species are a source of agar-agar and
some species are eaten fresh.
