Short agar-agar red seaweed
Gracilaria sp.*
Family Gracilariaceae
updated Aug 10

Where seen? Dense clumps of this seaweeds are commonly seen on many of our shores. On boulders, rocks and stones near the mid water mark. Abandoned ropes and nets often become heavily matted with this seaweed.

Features: Dense bunch of many slender, cylindrical 'stems' about 5-10cm long. Each 'stem' branches many times into short slender side branches with tapering tips. Black, maroon sometimes purplish.

Human uses: Gracilaria species are a source of agar-agar and some species are eaten fresh.
