Where seen? These long elegant red seaweeds are sometimes seen on our Northern shores, growing in sandy areas near seagrass meadows.

Features: Loose bunch of slender, cylindrical 'stems' about 15-20cm long. Each 'stem' has a few slender side branches that taper at the tips. Red, brownish or blackish. Sometimes green.

Human uses: Gracilaria species are a source of agar-agar and some species are eaten fresh.
