Branched halymenia seaweed
Halymenia sp.*
Family Halymeniaceae

updated Aug 10

Where seen? Like red plastic tassels, this seaweed is commly seen on our Southern shores, attached to coral rubble near reefs.

Features: Clumps of several flat sheets up to 10-20cm across. Each clump can be quite large but the clumps are scattered. The blade is smooth, slippery and thick with a flat central 'stem' from which arise finer branches that branch further and end in pointed tips. Colours range from maroon, red to orangey-brown.
