Hairy
seahorse
Hippocampus sp.*
Family Syngnathidae
updated
Aug 08
Where
seen? This small 'hairy' seahorse is sometimes seen on
our Northern shores, among seagrasses and seaweeds.
Features: 6-8cm long. Generally
smaller than the other kinds of seahorses seen. Body brown or grey
with tufts of fluffy 'hairs' or tendrils all over their bodies. These
make this seahorse a challenge to spot.
Status and threats: Seahorses
are listed as CITES II (which means their international trade is monitored)
and are considered globally vulnerable. Hippocampus kuda is
listed among the threatened animals of Singapore. |
