Red ribbon worm
awaiting identification*
updated Oct 08

Where seen? This short red ribbon worm is commonly seen at night. Red ones are seen on our Southern shores in coral rubble and near reefs. Longer pink ones are also sometimes seen in silty areas on our Northern shores near seagrasses and mangroves.

Features: Grouped in this entry are ribbon worms that are 10-15cm long with broad flat bodies coloured red, orange or pink. Sometimes, the yellowish internal parts can be seen through the lower half of the body.

Many of of these worms can be glimpsed among seaweeds at night, extending their bodies out of hiding places. They retract instantly as soon as light shines on them, or they feel a disturbance. You only get one chance at a flash photo of them!
