Si GuimWhy I want to guide at Chek Jawa? I have been a nature guide at many habitats. With my biological sciences background, here is another place that I can contribute. It is important to help people who are not inclined towards nature to understand that nature is an intimate part of our lives. That it is an inseparable part of us, no matter how our daily life detach us from it. About my first time on Chek Jawa? My first time there was on a salvage operation, after announcement that it was to be reclaimed. It was an attempt to save what is possible before they were smothered by development. We rode out in boats before the break of dawn. The red hot sun greeted us as we neared CJ (Apocalypse Now). Soon the great green expanse of CJ was presented before us. It was unfathomable why such a rich natural habitat have to give way to anything else. It seemed that the sun would never warm this place again as calamity is imminent. At that point in time, viewing from the sea, I fell in love with the breathtaking CJ and at the same time aching that this love would be short-lived. With the stay of execution, for now, more will get the opportunity to see it. My favourite creature of Chek Jawa: I do not have a favourite creature. All are present to make the habitat natural and complete. Some are very rare, though. Occasional encounters bring great joy, like seeing a close kin. My favourite memory at Chek Jawa: Once I put a snapping (pistol) shrimp in a plastic bottle. I asked some visitors to feel the side of the container. When the shrimp snapped, they were amazed at the strength of the shock waves. I explained that this is a specialised survival tool for this creature. All the others have theirs. What I do at high tide? I am a Perfusionist at NUH and is part of the heart surgery team there. Much of my free time, away from work, is spent communing with nature. It is balancing up what is sorely missing in the urban environ. Call it preserving sanity. I enjoy sharing the wonders of nature with others. It is a great joy to see young and old understanding that all things, no matter big or small, are important. |
