Nyatoh
Pouteria linggensis
Family Sapotaceae

A Nyatoh tree grows right on the shore of Chek Jawa. The tiny fruits (1cm) ripen almost to black. The Nyatoh tree belongs to the same family as the 'chiku' (Achras sapota) that we eat. However, the fruits of the Nyatoh look very different and are not edible. The flowers are tiny (less than 1cm) and cream.

Human uses: The timber, known as 'Nyatoh', is used to build houses.

Status and threats: The tree was previously not even known to exist in Singpaore. It was only recently discovered as native to Singapore. Several other trees are found on Lazarus Island.
