30 Jun (Wed): Slidetalk on the Hibiscus Family
Time: 7pm. The NSS office at The Sunflower, 510 Geylang Road #02-05
Open only to NSS members and associates

By Tan Geok Choo. Hibiscus are a familiar sight in parks, gardens and along our roadsides. But how much do we really know about this fascinating group of plants? For example, did you know that we commonly eat one species of Hibiscus and drink another, or that we have Hibiscus species in our mangroves or that there are wild species in uncultivated open spaces? What other members of the Hibiscus family do we have in Singapore, and where can we find them? What makes the structure of Hibiscus family flowers so unique, and who visits these colourful botanical wonders? Together we’ll learn some interesting facts, see some photos of beautiful blossoms, and above all marvel at the natural history of a diverse group of plants. The Plant Group will also be giving away seeds of hibiscus for nature lovers to propagate at home, school or office!

4 Jul (Sun): 5th Mid-year Bird Census
Open only to NSS members and associates

This is the third type of census that the Bird Group conducts every year. While the earlier two censuses include the migratory species, this census is aimed primarily at our resident species (although there might be some over-wintering species counted every year). Baseline data collected on the population will assist the Society in detecting, investigating and hopefully, addressing any declining population numbers of our resident birds. As this census also encourages birders to count birds around their own neighbourhood, its other aim to encourage backyard birdwatching among its members will also be met. Your enthusiastic help is again needed. Each year has seen an increasing number of participants in such censuses, and with more help, more places can be counted. Which bird will top the list again this year? Will there be a decline in numbers? Will the total number of species counted increase or decrease? Stay tuned for the results and remember to be part of this event!
