Nature activities and events happening this week

10-16 Oct 05

13 Oct (Thu): Free lunchtime talk "Southeast Asian biodiversity crisis"

Assoc Prof Navjot S Sodhi gives this talk. Southeast Asia has one of the highest relative rates of forest loss of any major tropical region. We report on the current state of Southeast Asia's biotas and highlight the primary threats (e.g., forest conversion). Measures to deal with these threats are constrained by socioeconomic factors (e.g. poverty and lack of infrastructure). Any realistic solution will likely involve a multi-disciplinary strategy (e.g. political, socioeconomic and scientific), in which all major stakeholders (e.g. government, non-government, national and international organizations) must participate.
