Cyrene (Terumbu Pandan)

Habitats: Central area sandy with good seagrass meadows, rubbly and rocky on western and eastern tips, rubbly edges sparsely reefy.

Conservation status: Does not appear on the URA Master Plan 2008 or the Parks and Waterbodies Plan.

Current conservation activities:

Since 1986, Cyrene Reef is one of the survey sites of underwater coral reef surveys by ReefFriends of NParks and the Blue Water Volunteers. The intertidal area is also regularly surveyed by wildsingapore.
2006-now: TeamSeagrass with NParks has been monitoring seagrasses at Cyrene.
Ad-hoc: Short-term studies of seagrasses, Common sea stars (Archaster typicus) and Knobbly sea stars (Protoreaster nodosus).
Ongoing: An effort to bring decision makers in government and corporations to visit Cyrene.

About the name: Terumbu=A reef or rock at low tide but submerged at high water; Pandan probably refers to Sungei Pandan, a river on the mainland that lies north of these reefs. Greek mythology describe Cyrene as an 'extraordinarily beautiful' woman descended from a river god and a nymph.
