22-24 Jun (Wed-Fri): Asia for Animals Conference
Phoenix Ballroom (Level 6), Novotel Clarke Quay

Hosted by Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) this conference will emphasise consolidating experiences to develop new strategies and facilitating change. Governmental and non-governmental representatives and experts will be debating the following topics: Disaster Relief & Recovery, ZooCheck Work in Asia, Stray Animal Management, Rescue Centre Operations, Farm Animal Welfare, The Role of Government Agencies in Animal Protection, Tackling the Illegal Wildlife Trade, Media & Communication Strategies for NGOs.

A series of related, hands on, expert-facilitated workshops will be incorporated into the programme. The workshops will discuss of methods, strategies and solutions for animal advocacy/conservation workers in Asia in a more intimate environment. Registration for these workshops is on the first day of the conference.

24 Jun (Fri): Herb and Spice Culinary Workshop “Mum’s Secret Recipes” by Evelyn Tan

Herbs and spices are integral to cuisine across many different cultures. They grace dishes with their distinctive flavours and are known for their medicinal and health-enhancing properties, on top of their rich historical and cultural significance. For this workshop, Evelyn Tan, well-known for her mouthwatering herbal, spicy culinary delights which were crowd-favourites at Plant Appreciation Day last November, promises to tantalize our taste buds with her Nasi Ulam. This is a traditional Malay rice salad made with a wide array of herbs and spices such as lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, torch ginger and basil….scrumptious! Get ready to roll up your sleeves and put on an apron when you join Evelyn and her friends at this fun-filled cook-in which will be happening with lots of hands-on participation and of course, food sampling and drinks! Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis, limited to 30 participants with priority given to members. Participants may be asked for contributions to cover cost of the ingredients.

Part of the Blue Water Volunteers Reef Talks, Jeffrey Low will share with us his adventures (and misadventures) of being a marine biologist. What does being a marine biologist entail? Is it as glamarous as it sounds? With 10 years experience in this field, Jeffrey has more than his fair share of stories to share and exciting photos to show. So LOOK OUT! (also look out for photos of marine biologists in the 1980s...)

25 Jun (Sat): Native Plant Hunt Hindhede Nature Park, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

Are you curious about the names of some of the plants found in Hindhede Nature Park? Here's a chance to help you learn at least 8 native plant species in a fun way! Form a team of three to five members and join us in the Native Plant Hunt!

The free plant hunts are conducted by the Building and Environment Green Volunteers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Engineering. Registration for the free plant hunt is limited to maximum of 10 people per registrant.

The plant hunt is available and chargeable for organised groups (minimum 20 participants) on other dates. At least 1 month's notice is needed to book for this specially arranged plant hunt, which is organised by Nparks.

Experience Ubin’s wonderful nature through your different senses along our Sensory Trail. The easy walk is an excellent introduction to the rustic and natural character of the island. You will be able to touch, see or smell fruit trees, spices and herbs for cooking, plants used in traditional medicine and native plants of the mangrove forest. more

Time: Tours start at 9.30am and 10am, meet 10 minutes before the tour stars at the Ubin Information Kiosk (near Ubin Jetty).
Tour duration: one and a half hours.

Journey through time with our volunteer guides in this one-hour tour. Bizarre plants, bubbling pools of hot lava and lots of other things you wouldn't expect to see in a botanic garden!

You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more

26 Jun (Sun): Birdwatching at Bukit Batok West Avenue 2 with Wing Chong
open only to NSS members

Nature is creeping its way back into this ex-kampung area. Both parkland and grassland birds have made their homes in this mixed habitat. This walk will cover some open areas where it gets very hot by 9.00am. Be prepared with lots of water and a cap or umbrella while we enjoy spotting lovely park and grassland birds.

Time: 7.30am, meet at the entrance of the carpark infront of the Bukit Batok Home for the Aged and Block 426, off Bukit Batok West Avenue 2.

Pui San welcomes artists of all ages or anyone who wants to learn. His objective is to encourage creativity while enjoying nature at the same time. Bring along your favourite drawing or painting supplies. More about Pui San.

Time: Meet 8.30am at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve ticketing counter (Visitor Centre). Session usually lasts until about 11am.
