28 May 05 S'pore leaders tackle climate change by Sheralyn Tay ACADEMICS, land developers, energy retailers, Government figures and players from the transport and motor industries gathered on Friday in Singapore's first Climate Change Roundtable discussion. The closed-door session, organised by the Ministry for Environment and Water Resources and the Focus Group on Air and Climate Change, is part of the Singapore Green Plan 2012 Focus Group consultation exercise, which sought to identify key climate change issues and how to tackle them. Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee, said after the discussion that "all the ideas harvested today will go towards the action plan". He said that the participants agreed that the technology is available for Singapore to achieve green targets. The challenges include assessing whether regulations should be mandatory, voluntary or market-based, he added. For Dr Geh Min, co-chair of the Green Plan Focus Group for Air and Climate Change, one of the greatest challenges is public awareness. "There isn't enough public awareness and demand to drive green vehicles and buildings. Industries can provide it any time but the public must want it."
