Five youths recognised for outstanding contributions to the environment

Five young environmentalists were recognised for their outstanding contribution towards environmental protection and nature conservation, at the 2005 HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Awards, held at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve today.

Jointly organised by HSBC and the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council, with the support of the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the National Parks Board (NParks), the annual Youth Environmental Awards seeks to acknowledge and honour young people who have excelled and distinguished themselves through their commitment and participation in environmental activities.

More importantly, the Awards are designed to highlight the catalytic role that youths can play in raising environmental awareness and triggering environmental action.

For demonstrating initiative and exceptional leadership qualities on top of their tireless dedication to the environmental cause, two young Singaporeans, Ms Choo Peiling 18, from National Junior College and Ms Teh Ling Ling 19, from Ngee Ann Polytechnic received the 2005 HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental Award from Guest of Honour Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District and Chairperson, Government Parliamentary Council for the Environment and Water Resources.

Three others, aged 17 to 23, received Merit Awards in recognition of their consistent efforts in caring for the environment.
