A guardian of the environment

MISS Pauline Lim is the kind of person who picks up other people's litter.

'I'm very particular about hygiene,' said the accountant, 55. 'I dislike it when people spit, or leave soiled tissues in hawker centres.'

Now, she has taken her passion for the environment one step further, by becoming an Environmental Guardian for the Central Singapore District.

One of 15 volunteers, she will help spread the clean and green message among her neighbours in Tiong Bahru. Yesterday, she was at the Jalan Besar GRC Clean & Green Sunday 2005 with guest of honour Heng Chee How, Minister of State for National Development and mayor of Central Singapore community development council. Also present were MPs Loh Meng See and Lily Neo.

'Our Environmental Guardians will play two key roles,' Mr Heng told the gathering. 'First, it is to safeguard the environment from becoming a breeding ground for infectious diseases. Second, it is to cultivate graciousness and consideration among our people for the environment.'

The volunteers received a few weeks of training, including how to identify possible dengue breeding grounds. They will also inform residents about environmentally friendly practices such as recycling.
