Can dioxin leach from plastic bags carrying hot drinks?
Letter from Loy Moi Long

THE poisonous chemical dioxin found in plastic is said to be the cause of many cancers nowadays. Everyone is wary and using plastic water bottles less. Heating food in a plastic container in the microwave oven is also strongly discouraged by scientists.

However, most of our takeaway hot beverages or cooked foods from food outlets are still packed in plastic bags or containers. It is not uncommon to see hot teh tarik or soup being carried in plastic bags.

I am worried that the hot temperature will release dioxin from the plastic into the food. Could the authorities concerned carry out some tests and comment on this?
