TV is a good medium to spread message on environment protection
Letter from Xu Sufen (Miss)

I logged into BBC news and discovered that it will be launching a few programmes on the environment in view of the forthcoming G-8 summit.

One of the issues to be discussed at the summit is climatic change.

I know I cannot make a direct comparison between Singapore's media and the UK's. But I can't help thinking about it.

The urgent issue of protecting our environment has been around for some time. Why are Singaporeans not taking a proactive role in this? It is not only the responsibility of the multinational corporations and the government. It is everyone's effort that's needed. We are the children of the earth and we are supposed to be a good steward of it.

We are talking about Singapore being inward-looking and narrow-minded, but I think the problem is related to the influence we could exercise to shape public opinion.

Campaigns and talk alone on environmental protection will not penetrate deep into our awareness.

I propose that a concerted effort be made with the help of the media. I refer particularly to the television programmes we can have on the subject. It will be a good start to teach young people about the urgency of the issue, particularly when they are going to inherit the future.

I am not talking about making boring documentaries. These can be creative to drive home the message effectively.
