Vietnam police seize truckload of illegal wildlife

HANOI (AFP) - Vietnamese police have said they have seized a one-tonne (ton) truckload of live turtles, snakes and other exotic animals and arrested two people for involvement in the illegal wildlife food trade.

The 1,050 kilogram cargo of exotic species intercepted in southern Dong Nai province near Ho Chi Minh City Thursday included 11 boxes of snakes, nine boxes of other reptiles and one box of turtles, said a local police officer Friday.

The 24-year-old truck driver and another man, 26, had been arrested and police were investigating the origin of the animals, said the officer, who asked not to be named.

Vietnam has become a major destination and trans-shipment country for illegal wildlife products from across Southeast Asia, much of which is smuggled onto China to be consumed in restaurants, say experts.
