480 students survey shoppers to find out how environmentally friendly Singaporeans are

SINGAPORE: 480 students from 6 schools have been tasked to collect data in supermarkets on how environmentally friendly Singaporeans are.

Using PDAs, the students from Xishan Primary tracked the number of plastic bags that the average Singaporean shopper uses.

"I have been waiting for 5 minutes, now there are 7 customers using a total of 34 plastic bags," said Kor Chun Wei, a Primary 4 student.

"They must use their own bags to keep the environment safe," said Yap Zhi Kai, another Primary 4 student.

Students also looked at the packaging of commonly used items at home, and reflected on how they can be recycled.

Shoppers were also surveyed. "We discovered that if every shop charges plastic bag 5 cents, they will bring their own bags or their own plastic bag; they don't want to buy the shop's plastic bag," said Phua Yong Ming, a Primary 4 student.

The project is an initiative undertaken by Microsoft, the National Institute of Education and several other partners. The aim is to showcase how technology and software can be made more fun and interactive without being confined to a classroom. - CNA /dt
