I WOULD like to praise Singapore's decision to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

Being a 12-year-old student, I am happy that the Government is taking action to protect the environment for the future.

I am also heartened to see that more Green Weeks are being organised to increase public awareness of the importance of saving the environment.

One main cause of air pollution is fossil-fuel combustion from vehicles. Incentives should be offered to motorists who drive hybrid cars.

Also, being a country where we have good sunshine all year round, we should develop more renewable sources of energy such as solar power.

I REFER to the letter, 'Offer incentives to hybrid-car owners' (ST, Nov 13), by Hakim Suriyat. The Government has put in place a Green Vehicle Rebate since 2001.

Green vehicles, such as hybrid vehicles and compressed-natural-gas passenger vehicles, enjoy an Additional Registration Fee rebate of 40 per cent of the Open Market Value at registration.

Hybrid vehicles achieve better fuel economy and, hence, lower fuel costs than conventional vehicles. This serves as an added incentive for motorists who drive such vehicles.

We agree with the writer that the uptake of renewable energy, such as solar energy, would reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

In Singapore, there are many solar-thermal collector installations for hot-water production serving domestic and commercial premises.

The National Environment Agency also supports the demonstration and test-bedding of renewable-energy technologies as well as adoption of innovative technologies to improve energy efficiency through schemes such as the Innovation for Environmental Sustainability Fund.

The projects that we have supported include using building-integrated photovoltaics to produce electricity from solar energy and trigeneration technology to improve the overall energy efficiency of producing electricity, steam and chilled water for an industry.
