26 Feb - 4 Mar 07

27 Feb (Tue): Sticky Business: An Update on Barnacle Glues
by Professor Dan Rittschof, Duke University Marine Laboratory

Settlement and growth of marine bio-fouling by sessile marine organisms such as barnacles cause serious damage to the protective surfaces on man-made structures and equipment immersed in the sea. Fouling organisms produce adhesive polymers during the settlement, adhesion and colonization of new surfaces in the marine environment. Modern technology-based antifouling solutions such as non-toxic fouling resistant marine coatings rely on disruption of the bio-adhesion mechanisms of these organisms. Although some liken glue polymerization to watching paint dry, we find it fun and exciting using evolutionary concepts to develop and test hypotheses when ever we can.
