Pectinid
corals
Family Pectiniidae
updated
Oct 11
Where
seen? Carnation corals are members of this family and these
are sometimes seen on our Southern shores.
Features: The colonies
are generally leafy or plate-like. There are intricate patterns on
their surfaces, resulting from the unique structure of their corallites.
The polyps are tiny.
The most commonly encountered on the shores are the Carnation
corals (Pectinia sp.).
Status and threats: Some members
of the Family Pectiniidae recorded for Singapore are listed as globally
threatened by
the IUCN. Like other creatures of the intertidal zone, they are
affected by human activities such as reclamation and pollution. Trampling
by careless visitors, and over-collection also have an impact on local
populations.
