Nature activities and events happening this week 29 Oct - 4 Nov 07 1 Nov (Thu): Life as a sanctioned Professional Killer A Lunchtime Science Talk organized by the Faculty of Science A talk by Professor Peter Ng Kee Lin Department of Biological Sciences. In the field of biodiversity science, the killing and preservation of animal specimens for research is an integral part of the discipline. This is all the more so in systematics, which is my forte. In the 25 years I have been in this field, thousands of crustaceans, fish and other animals have been killed in the name of 'science', and as a university professor, I have given the 'blessings' to dozens of students and colleagues to kill even more. Does that make me a 'mass murderer'? And what has this 'killing' achieved in my discipline? How does this scale of 'scientific killing' correlate with the so called 'biodiversity crisis' facing the planet in which thousands of species are under threat of extinction? If a biologistıs desire is to conserve how we rationalize with this need to kill? In a wide ranging talk, these seemingly conflicting aspects will be discussed and hopefully parsimonised. All are welcome. Sandwiches will be provided for the first 100 attendees. Nov (Fri): Wildlife StampedeJoin the Singapore Wildlife Stampede led by Dr. Jane Goodall (primatologist and conservationist) and her friends. Dress up as your favourite endangered plant or animal and advocate for our wild habitats! Bring an eco-picnic and see Dr. Goodall in person with her chimpanzee mascot, Mr H. There'll be a picnic at 5pm at Palm Valley! Help make this an eco-friendly event: Bring reuseable drinking bottles, natural mats not plastic, and homemade picnic food - reduce picnic disposables and litter - reuse old materials for costumes - recycle after parade. Nov (Sat): National Library Garden Walk The Garden Walks tour introduces the surprisingly large number of plant species within the National Library gardens. Volunteer guides share the economic and therapeutic values of plants. Tours in English (Mandarin upon request). No registration is required. Please take your place in person at the National Library Main Lobby Information Counter at Level 1, half an hour before the tour begins. Nov (Sat): Lower Peirce Boardwalk free Nature Appreciation Walk The 900m boardwalks take you through the forest then along the edge of the Reservoir. So you will encounter a wide range of wildlife from forest to aquatic creatures. And enjoy wonderful panaromas of waters surrounding by luxuriant forest. Shaded by the forest, the walk is pleasantly cool and suitable for young children. more Time: 9.25am or 10.25am. Nov (Sat): Nature Appreciation Walk at Pulau Ubin Sensory Trail
Special event for Clean and Green Singapore 2007 The Pulau Ubin Sensory Trail is a 1.5km long earth trail showcasing some of the various landscapes seen in Ubin; a walk here brings the visitor through a vegetable garden, orchards, mangroves, secondary forests and coconut plantations. Nov (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Special events for Clean and Green Singapore 2007 Mangrove walks Free guided walk for a tranquil stroll through the mangroves to watch kingfishers and mudskippers. Easy trails, some suitable for young children. Bird Watching Free guided introduction to birdwatching from the Main Hide.
