Invitation by MPA to participate in relocation of intertidal marine life

Dear Ria,

1 During our briefing to you on 5th May 2007, MPA shared our reasons and plans for developing the Pasir Panjang Container Terminal. We also shared that MPA would remain committed in ensuring that environmental protective measures will be put in place to safeguard the marine environment. Therefore, we are glad to inform you that the translocation of corals in the area affected by development work in the vicinity of Labrador Nature Reserve is in progress.

2 Additionally, MPA will also be carrying out the translocation of intertidal marine life affected by the work. The intertidal marine life translocation exercise will be carried out in the morning from 8am to 10am during the low tides on 30 May 06, 31 May 06, 14 June 06, 15 June 06 and 16 June 06.

3 As some environmentally-friendly organizations have expressed interest during the briefing to be a part of this meaningful exercise, we would like to extend the invitation to your organisation to participate in the intertidal marine life translocation exercise on a voluntary basis. The total number of volunteers for the exercise will be limited to 20 persons on each of the 5 days. This is due to the limited frontage of the affected area and to minimise the disturbance to other parts of the beach not affected by the development.

4 We would appreciate it if you could let us know the number of volunteers that will be participating in the exercise on each of the days. The volunteers will be scheduled on a first-come first-serve basis, subject to the 20-person limit. If the number of volunteers exceeds 20 persons a day, it will be necessary to reschedule some of the volunteers to another day and any inconvenience caused is much regretted.

5 To ensure a smooth exercise and the safety of the volunteers, we have attached a short note on the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ during the translocation for your information.

6 As this a voluntary exercise, the volunteers are requested to sign an indemnity form. This form is to be returned to us before/on the day of the translocation exercise he/she is participating in.

7 Should you have further queries, please contact me at 63751772. Thank you.

Regards, Hwei Yee Engineer (PPTD)
